Blogging and Social Media

Jocelyn Mader wrote about her experience with pregnancy after breast cancer for LBBC's blog.

Manager

As manager of Living Beyond Breast Cancer's blog, I seek out interesting stories that highlight individual people's breast cancer journeys and help readers feel less alone. Named one of Healthline's "19 Best Breast Cancer Blogs of 2016," the LBBC blog has featured the stories of dozens of people affected by breast cancer, including LBBC volunteers like Felicia Johnson talking about what volunteering for LBBC means to them, and women like Jocelyn Mader, who shared her story of pregnancy after breast cancer.

As the Centre Foundation's social media manager, I used social media outlets, primarily Facebook and Twitter, to promote the foundation and keep people aware of its activities, always keeping an eye out for news items, facts and community events that would inform and interest the foundation's followers.
I used the foundation's blog, which I created, to promote local nonprofit events, get the word out about needs in the community and to profile organizations that the foundation gave grants to.

As a result, the foundation saw a large increase in social media engagement - for example, there were more than eight times as many 'likes' on the foundation's Facebook page when I left as there were when I took the reins in April 2011.

The foundation's entrance into the world of social media was lauded by many local nonprofit administrators, who appreciated the cross-marketing that social media made possible.

I planned, promoted and was a speaker at the 2011 Community Information Technology Workshop, held in State College, Pa. The event featured speakers who talked about the importance of social media, social media best practices and emerging social media trends, among other topics. I spoke about mobile social media and demonstrated how to use Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare to inform followers while on the go.

Later that year, I also spoke to members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church about how to use social media to strengthen their congregation and increase knowledge of, and participation in, church activities.

Profile in Town & Gown Magazine

Town & Gown ran a story in January 2012 about the increasing prominence of social media in people's lives. It spotlighted a few local people who use social media to strengthen the community - including me! In the article, I talk about my eagerness to implement a social media strategy for the Centre Foundation, and the importance of reaching out to supporters (and potential supporters) through this medium. The articles quotes me as saying "[Social media] is a really great way for us to reach out to people who might normally not know much about us. It's a lot easier to find information via social media than it is to do it in more traditional ways."

Study Abroad Blogger

While studying abroad in St. Petersburg, Russia, in the fall of 2010, I contributed to the Collegian's Small World blog, writing about everything from the experience of living with a host family to whom I could barely speak, to the beauty of the palaces that lined Nevsky Prospekt, to a vacation in Egypt, where riding a camel was just one of the strange and exciting experiences I had.

Guest Blogger

I attended the 2010 National Autism Conference in State College, Pa., and blogged about it on behalf of Penn State Outreach. The posts appeared on Penn State Live, the university's news site.

In 2011 I contributed a post to the Council on Foundations' blog, RE: Philanthropy, about the importance of instilling a love for community in an area's residents.
